"The art of New Ireland has been celebrated in the West since the first discovery of the islands by Europeans. The first descriptions of canoes and male ornaments date to the voyage of Tasman in 1643, and "curiosities" were collected by travellers from the early nineteenth century onwards. The objects which have incited most interest are primarily related to the malangan rituals of northern New Ireland, and it was those objects which fascinated, first and foremost, the Surrealists in Paris between the first and second World Wars. The Swiss artist Serge Brignoni (1903-2002), who settled in Paris in 1923 to study at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, formed one of most important collections of New Ireland art from the late 1920s onwards, financed in part by the trade in works of art.
The term malangan covers a complex system of rituals and ceremonies commemorating the dead. Carved figures were displayed to honour a deceased person, although they did not function as portraits. Their role was to inspire fear, to captivate the audience, and to show the respect which the person who commissioned the object felt for the deceased. As Richard Parkinson highlighted at the end of the nineteenth century (in John Dennison, Thirty Years in the South Seas, 1999, p. 282), "each sculpture […] carries a specific history" and it is impossible to associate a single interpretation with an individual sculpture. The person who commissioned the sculpture had the right to reproduce particular motifs, which consist of a rich variety in the case of the offered figure."
